Room One (Year 0 - 1) Fiona van den Brink Room One Currently we have fourteen children in Room One. Four children have started school this year, the rest are our ‘old’ friends from last year. We have started off the year making a Classroom Treaty – To tatou Tiriti Akomanga. It states that: we all have the right to learn, to be respected, to have our voices heard and to listen. That we learn when we: use our manners, make mistakes, share, are kind and laugh. We are all learning to say our Pepeha and a few of us have even tried to say it in front of the class or Junior Ropu. In Literacy, some of us are learning the sounds that letters make and we take home sound cards to practise. A small group are reading decodable readers and they take home these books to share. Each fortnight we have new Heart Words to learn, these words help us write stories and are in lots of our reading books. We are having lots of fun making rhyming words and breaking words into syllables. For Maths we are finding out about numbers that come before and after a number, and putting jumbled numbers in order. We are practising counting up and back from numbers in the twenties. We each have a pack of cards and are learning to do number activities with them. We love doing puzzles and jigsaws together. We are starting to put some work in our books. It is fun using them and trying things for the first time.Just outside one of our classroom walls there is a lot of banging and noise. We are having a Learning Corridor built between Rooms One, Two and Three. We are really excited about this new space and are looking forward to working and gathering in this area soon.
